Causes Of Insomnia And Night Sweats

Insomnia is a chronic inability to get adequate sleep. If you are not able to sleep through the night, have extreme difficulty falling asleep, or get up several times during the night for various reasons on a regular basis, then chances are that you too suffer from insomnia. The numbers of sufferers around the world are staggering and no one really knows the reason for the growing number of people suffering with insomnia. If you suffer with this condition long enough you will find yourself entertaining quite a few day dreams about how to stop insomnia once and for all.

Many Things Cause Insomnia

Stress. This might be the number one factor to cause insomnia. Whether it's worry about work, health, family or whether the kitchen light has been turned off, when the mind runs on and on, sleep can be very elusive. When this factor is deemed to cause insomnia, it can be a little difficult to sort through at first. When the issues are tackled, however, the insomnia can right itself.

Anxiety. Going beyond stress, anxiety can cause insomnia. In serious anxiety cases, the mind refuses to shut off. This makes sleep difficult at best to obtain. Treating the anxiety, if it is the blamed as the cause insomnia problem, can lessen the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Should a parent of a 17 year old with insomnia try to force her to sleep?
For the past year I've struggled with horrible insomnia because of a medical condition that caused drenching night sweats and this horrific, tormenting itch all over my body under my skin (so it could never be scratched away), and was finally diagnosed over the summer with the medical condition that was causing it all. I would love to just fall into bed and sleep like a normal person, but that's not what happens. When I'm lying down the sweating seems to be worse, and it's very hard for me to fall asleep even when I'm exhausted. I used to just stay up all night working on my homework or art so at least my mind could stay distracted and I wouldn't just be lying still feeling horrible and going mental, but my dad has freaking tried to give me a bedtime even though I'm 17 years old, have already graduated from high school (I'm home this year dealing with the medical thing), and *cannot* sleep! He's talked to my doctor about it, and he knows I'm not just some little kid wanting to stay up all night. Still, though, he's locked the room I use for my art so I can't go in there after 11 and wants me to turn off the internet, TV, phone and all that, and stop reading and working on things by midnight and just.....do nothing. He wants me to stay in my room, and "clear my mind." Which is torture, because it's my body that is annoying me. This isn't a case of mind over matter! I can't just make my body do what I want it to and fall asleep! So now I am about to get booted off the internet even though I won't be able to sleep anyway, and just being here in my room is going to drive me insane. I get the importance of sleep for my health, but it's not something that I can just make happen. I'm so freaking frustrated by my parents. Am I really being the unreasonable one here or are they? I mean, seriously. I don't know what else to do at this point. Advice?

    • ANSWER:
It seems like the are being fairly unreasonable, and my instinct tells me that they were probably always totalitarians.

My suggestion, you're 17, you're an artist, go to college far far away. If that is not an option for you, make it one. Apply for scholarships and grants, do what ever you can. If need be move to a friends house.

You're father's request that you "clear your mind" and try to sleep is clearly unreasonable if you have a medical condition causing this problem.

What I would like to know however is what is the medical condition, and did your doctor mention any treatment methods.

In the meantime, buy yourself a flashlight and a good book, and if he has anything to say about it, tell him to go to hell, as you'll be 18 soon and what he wants you to do will be irrelevant and legally unenforceable.

Conversely, you could try to reason with your parents. Of course don't expect this approach to work right away, but eventually you may be able to break them, granted it will be hard to be clever if you aren't getting any sleep.

      Good Luck.

  2. QUESTION:
Should i keep taking Anti depressants if they cause me sexual dysfunction and insomnia?
Ive just been given Venlafaxine from my doctor, but now i have more added worry because of the side effects--after taking 1 tablet i completely lost the ability to orgasm, and on top of that i have insomnia and night sweats---i feel worse after a week and all they seem to be doing is making my head numb so i can't be bothered to talk---is there any other medicine that will work for social anxiety. all the SSRI have the same dreaded effect on me, whats worse depression or erectile problems and non sleep.

    • ANSWER:
These initial side effect symptoms are very common and your prescribing physician was under an obligation to warn you they were almost certain to occur. However the patient data sheet in every pack also warns you about them. In the majority of patients they subside in 3 to 4 weeks.

  3. QUESTION:
What causes insomnia and temperature sensitivity?
Recently ive noticed that ive been much colder in a room than anyone else almost all the time. When i sleep im very cold in the room but once under the blankets i feel like im about to sweat. Im not sleeping well at night at all but i can sleep in the daytime easily...perhaps my sleep schedule is off but OTC sleeping pills dont seem to have much of an effect on me either? Is there anything that can cause this?
Hmm in response...no drugs...i was battling off a pretty bad eye infection these last few weeks with some prescription eyedrops...ive emailed my doctor who should be able to tell if those could be a cause of this or if iti s something else...Thanks for the answer

    • ANSWER:
Like the person above me said, it might be due to a thyroid hormone imbalance or problem....
But since you are a guy I wouldn't worry about the menopause part :-) , but your symptoms are a bit different than what most people with overactive Thyroids (like myself) or even under active thyroids (they're always cold) experience..........................so I am wondering.........you haven't been using drugs have you?? The symptoms show withdrawal, it doesn't have to be a drug drug, it can be a simple pain killer that you're trying not to take!? Or for some people they go into withdrawal after using even alcohol for some days in a row...
      hope that helps..

  4. QUESTION:
    PLEASE ANSWER........?
Is insomnia the cause of my night sweats?

Ok so i have sleep onset insomnia and i started to get these night sweats, so i was wondering is my insomnia what caused this?

    PLEASE ANSWER
I am 16 years old and male.
    Just incase you were wondering
I have had it for a month and a half i believe and it does not look like its going away anytime soon

    • ANSWER:
Insomnia can be chronic (ongoing) or acute (short-term). Chronic insomnia means having symptoms at least 3 nights a week for more than a month. Acute insomnia lasts for less time.

Some people who have insomnia may have trouble falling asleep. Other people may fall asleep easily but wake up too soon. Others may have trouble with both falling asleep and staying asleep.

As a result, insomnia may cause you to get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. You may not feel refreshed when you wake up.

  5. QUESTION:
Will Paxil Cause problems if stopped after 6days use?
I was prescribed paxil by my neurologist when he cannot find anythin wrong with my EEG. Originally I was sent to him for couple of dizziness issues.

He started me with 20mg right away and did not warn about any side effects. I was also lazy so did not check the internet for side effects. Couple of days after starting on paxil i started getting night sweats, insomnia, sudden tremors, nausea etc. I went to ER two days in a row thinking i am having a stroke. No one even bother to warn me that paxil can cause this.

Finally I went to my regular doctor o sixth day and he was surprised i was prescribed Paxil even though there were no indications of anxiety or depression. He told me all the problems i am having in last week are due to paxil. He asked me to stop it immediately.

Now i see on internet that there are withdrawal symptoms for paxil but will they happen even for short term(6day) use with 20mg dose?

By the way immediately after stopping it i saw my condition improved.
Actually Neurologist wrote me the prescription first time i went to see him without any explanation.

Also I still have agitation and hard time sleeping three days after stopping it. But all other symptoms seem to have improved. Weakness is gone, appetite returned.
I have called the neuro immediately and he told me these are common symptoms. He did not explain why he prescribed it to me and based on what diagnosis.

    • ANSWER:
It's unlikely you will suffer withdrawal afer only 6 days with Paxil. Where did you get your prescription for Paxil? If from a pharmacy, they are bound by law to provide you with information regarding side effects and warnings. If from your neurologist, he was neglegent in not informing you of side effects.

Some medications are used for purposes other than what they were originally developed. Perhaps he didn't prescribe it for depression. I don't agree with stopping the medication the neurologist prescribed without speaking with the neurologist about why he prescribed it. Why did he tell you he was prescribing it? Why did your doctor send you to him if he wasn't going to listen to his advice/diagnosis? The side effects you experienced may have lessened after a couple weeks of use of Paxil. It's also hard to believe that your symptoms stopped immediately after discontinuing it.

Your doctor and the neurologist need to confer with each other and let you know the reasons for their diagnosis. Communication is essential when there are consults with other doctors. If it were me, I'd ask the neuro why the Paxil was diagnosed in the first place, and relay what happened after you started taking it.

  6. QUESTION:
    Am I having Ativan withdrawals?
I was prescribed Ativan for sleep. I took 2mg at night every night for 3 years and it worked well for 2 + of those years. Ive read many things that it is a very bad medication and since it had stopped working well I decided to stop taking it instead of uping the dosage. I tried tapering it off over a period of about 3 weeks and my sleeping problems and anxiety that goes with that returned. This caused me to occasionally take a 1/2 a pill in the early morning in order to get some sleep. Whether it was a "psychological" thing or not, it did help me get a few hours sleep.

The first signs I had that something wasnt right were -
    Chronic Insomnia
    Night Sweats

I finally stopped all together taking the Ativan about 10 days ago. Since then I have had the following problems:

    1.Chronic Insomnia
2.Severe Anxiety (mostly in the very early morning)
    3.Eyelid twitching
    4.Lower abdominal pain
5.Upset stomach (Nausea - Gas pains - etc)
6.Occasionally smelling something that isnt there and increased sensitivity to sound and smell

The last one is the strangest and at the moment I feel like im going crazy and dont even recognize my actions or thoughts.

I saw a Psychiatrist this week who told me I may be experiencing prolonged withdrawal and it could continue for many months. He prescribed me Seroquel (25mg) for sleep. I took it last night and it didnt help me to fall asleep. The now normal morning anxiety returned and I am feeling like I may be going insane.

I know lack of sleep can be bad and have effects on your mind and body. I do feel like if I could get a few nights of REAL sleep I would start to return to normal. Right now im at the end of my rope and afraid I may not come back.

Has anyone has experienced similar problems after taking Ativan ? Any advice ?

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
I take ativan for anxiety. Luckily I had no withdrawal symptoms when I once went off it because of a low dosage. But I looked it up, and everything you listed is a side effect, except for the last one. It's an anti anxiety pill, so it causes anxiety. As well as an upset stomach and all the pain you talked about.

With the last one, did you tell anyone? It could be from the ativan but it's also a sign of epilepsy.

  8. QUESTION:
Initial Onset of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Adderall usage?
Exactly 4 days ago, I swallowed a 20 mg tablet of Adderall. The pill was illegally obtained and I do not have a prescription pertaining to the usage of it. (I understand many of you want to chastise me, and feel free to since it is a stupid mistake that I hope I'll have the chance to never do again, but please take the time to actually shed some light.

After several hours of studying, I began to feel adverse withdrawal effects to the adderall. These symptoms being... insomnia, sweating, depression, confusion, and a general feeling of illness. The next day, I still feel the effects a bit, including a short bout with delusional parasitosis. Eventually, I even out in the day and I just feel a little slow, but I simply rationalized that I had taken too much on my first time and that I just suffered a really bad comedown.

2 days after the ingestion, I run for about 30 minutes in the night. After sweating quite a bit, I begin to feel a rash on the back of my neck. I assume it's some sort of rash caused by sweating too much.

It's 2 days later, and the rash is still there, and I just researched a bit more into some of the adverse side effects of adderall, with some sites attributing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome as a possible side effect, and I'm freaking out. There's a list of symptoms that I possess, but I'm not sure if they're exactly caused by this SJS, since some of them are things I possess relatively normally. They list that red eyes may be a possible symptom. I naturally have pretty bloodshot eyes. They say joint tension is another symptom, but I typically have very tense joints. I haven't found any blisters or lesions on my body, except one tiny blister on my the bottom of my left foot, but that could be because I've been running quite a bit lately. My face looks a bit swollen, but that could just be because I ate quite a bit before I went to sleep and my sleeping schedule has been kind of messed up the past couple days.

Needless to say, I'm freaking out quite a bit. Can anyone give me a time line on when supposed symptoms are supposed to hit? All the articles I've read online don't really give specifics. It just lists off initial symptoms, and then says lesions and blisters start to abruptly appear. Does that mean that they should appear within a week or so?

And how frequent is this reaction to adderall? Especially in such a small dosage for one isolated incident? Though I've read references to adderall possibly causing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome from several sites on adderall, almost all of the SJS sites I've read make absolutely no reference to adderall being on the list of drugs to watch out for.

Any other advice or help would be greatly appreciate. Quickly. I need to nip this in the bud as fast as possible since it seems like 1/2 of the people die from this disease, and others are horrible scarred. Please and thank you so much for any help and advice.

    • ANSWER:
If you dont have mouth blisters or fever, or rapidly developing rash, you may not have SJS.
I had SJS at age 11, and the onset was rapid...within 48 hours, and severe....high fever, delerium, rash over half my body, severe mouth and lip blisters, rapid involvement of eyes and lids- irritation, swelling, redness.
You may not follow this pattern, but I suggest you start off by seeing a dermatologist who has SJS experience, and be prepared for a hospital stay of several weeks or longer.

      Best wishes.

  9. QUESTION:
Constant illness over the past several months, related to anxiety/bipolar?
I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and a slew of anxiety disorders, and am still trying to find the right medication or combination of meds to treat it effectively.

Over the past three months I have been constantly ill. Every day it's something different - gastrointestinal problems, "unidentified" viruses, ear infections, walking pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, a low-grade on and off fever that has been present at least 1-2 days out of every week for the past 12 weeks, night sweats, severe insomnia (something I have always had but has gotten worse), weight loss (15lbs in the past three months, without trying) etc.

I do not have any sort of chronic or immunocompromising disease like diabetes or HIV that would cause me to be so frequently sick. I had blood drawn in August and it was completely normal, and have been tested for the flu several times with negative results. My doctor's only answer is that it's "mental stress" and that is the reason my immune system has been so weak and I have not been able to get better.

Has anyone else experienced this with bipolar, anxiety, or any other sort of mental illness? How long were you sick for, and how did you finally get better? I am doing absolutely everything I can to avoid getting sick - I wash my hands frequently, I take vitamins and probiotics, I exercise (as much as my asthma allows), I'm doing everything that I know how to do to stay healthy and none of it is working.

I am meeting with my psychiatrist again next week and plan on asking her what her opinion is, but I was wondering if in the meantime anyone could share their experience. I just feel like there is something really wrong with me, it's hard to accept that this could all be because of my mental state.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    • ANSWER:
Interesting question because I've wondered the same thing myself!

I have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and I'm happy to say it's mostly under control and quite tolerable. However, before it was under control, I constantly had gastro problems (very typical physical symptom of anxiety), heart palpitations, a unusual PAP smear test result which then resulted in several uncomfortable tests over many months, and other misc. conditions which I can't even remember know because it was ridiculous.

I do think it's possible to have other medical conditions come on when you have anxiety (I can't speak for bipolar) because of the lack of sleep (and night sweats, waking up in a panic in the middle of the night), lack of appetite, constantly running on adrenaline and general lack of feeling well both mentally and physically. At the time, I felt like I was falling apart in mind and body. However....

I did get myself under control with therapy and eventually anti-depressants. I have been feeling much better mentally and physically. The insomnia, shaking hands, lack of appetite, racing heart etc. have gone away. My abnormal tests started coming back normal. I felt quite tired for awhile after months of poor sleep and high adrenaline but my energy has come back almost 100%.

Keep in mind, a lot of your physical conditions are due to the anxiety/bipolar (lack of appe, no sleep etc). There's lots of info on the net about physical symptoms for anxiety. The mind is a powerful thing.

Sorry for the long post but I have great sympathy for anyone who has mental health issues. I want you to know you aren't alone.

I'm glad to hear you're seeing a psychiatrist. I'm sure they'll get you on a great treatment plan.

      Good luck.

  10. QUESTION:
How do they know what kind of lymphoma you have?
Sorry I keep bombarding this site but I need answers. My best friend has a cancer scare and we think it's lymphoma and I am worried because at first it seemed like if she did have it she would be okay because she's only 17 but then last night someone asked a question about his 17 year old girlfriend dying of a Stage 4BE Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma so now I am freaking. Idk if she for sure has cancer yet but I'm scared. Here's the rundown: she's always been super skinny cause she's a dancer and athethic but she's like become even skinnier lately (00 skinny). But she ran a marathon in May though so I'm hoping that's why. She's been sick alot this past year - nothing serious but like lots of colds and stuff. Last year she was in the hospital for two days cause she had really serious infections (idk whole deal but it happened like after the flu and wisdom teeth getting removed) and they did tons of tests then and she didn't have cancer then. She doesn't ever sleep cause she gets bad night sweats, but she's had insomnia forever and likes to paint at night. All this has been going on for like months but it seemed like there was an explanation for it all. So after reading about lymphoma it seems like she's got all the symptoms of it but I mean they could just be other stuff. But her uncle died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma when he was 27, so that's why I'm really scared. I am just trying to get answers. She won't talk about it much. My mom went with her to the appointment on Monday cause her parents are out of town but they didn't tell her anything. They did give her a referal to a pediatric oncologist so that's why me and my mom are so upset. I just need to know this stuff. She's acting like nothing is wrong. She hasn't even told her boyfriend or her parents and she wont let me talk to anyone about it. She's just like whatever. About cancer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This whole thing started because a masseuse found a large lump under her armpit. She's already had blood tests and now they want her to get a biopsy done.
Thank you denise dd. That kinda like made me get a grip.

Panda, I'm so sorry about your son. Idk why but my mom was the one who said she thought it was lymphoma. She said Dami was in there with the doctor for a long time so idk maybe she did tell her everything but she won't talk to anyone about it. All my mom knows is that she was refered to a pediatric oncologist and got this form to take in for a biopsy cause this nurse near the reception area gave her the forms and my mom came up and saw them. Idk know if her doctor tried calling her parents. Nobody is at her house right now. Her dad is on his honeymoon and she thinks it will ruin it if she calls him. She refuses to and told me i can't call him. Plus she's supposed to go to China in two weeks and she's afraid she won't be allowed to go if her dad finds out before then so she wants to wait til she gets back in mid August. My mom doesnt have forms for her. The school does but Idk if my mom could get them. Thanks again to you both
Kira Idk what you are talking about. I never said that my mom signed any papers for her. My mom works beside the doctor's office and just went with her to the appointment because my friend gets faint after blood tests. My mom didn't go into the room with her. She sat in the waiting room the whole entire time and when my friend came out she came up to her and this nurse gave my friend the forms the doctor wanted her to have - the referal and this thing for a biopsy. The doctor's office already had consent from her parents like on file just for normal stuff so they didn't need a signature to see her. Her own parents have to sign off on the consent forms for the biospy and for her to see the new doctor. My mom can't do it.

    • ANSWER:
      Lars,

Your friend’s parents need to know what is going on right now. Your mother should call them ASAP. Did they leave a signed document with your mother allowing her to okay medical treatment? If so, your mom can start the ball rolling.

I don’t mean to scare you more than you already are, but I deal with cancer everyday and I have to tell you I would be VERY surprised if your friend doesn’t have lymphoma. Freaking out doesn’t help anyone. Getting this taken care of as soon as possible does. Cancer is serious and people, even young people, do die from it. At this point there is no way to know what her prognosis is it is just too early to tell. You have to take one step at a time. I don’t want to sound mean I understand what you are going through. When I was in high school one of my friend’s died from lymphoma – we were only 16.

Doing the biopsy will tell the doctors what kind of lymphoma she has. From there she will need a CT and probably a PET scan. Once this is done they will know the stage. Please have your mother get a hold of her parents.

EDIT: I understand you want to be a good friend, but sometimes that means you have to go against your friends wishes to do what is right. Believe me his honeymoon will matter very little to her father if something should happen to her. She will most likely have to put off her trip to China, but does that really compare to her life? Without treatment her symptoms will only get worse and the cancer will spread making it harder to treat and save her. Do you realize something could happen while she is in China? Do you know what medical care is like there? She should not be in that position. You sound like an intelligent girl I’m sure you know right from wrong. Her father needs to know.

  11. QUESTION:
Is it possible that someone experiencing extreme stress could be misdiagnosed with a serious mental illness?
Especially when the diagnosis comes at 45 years of age, with no previous history of mental illness?

My apologies for the lengthy additional details, but this is important. Here is a brief summary of what has happened in the past 4 years:

Single mom with rheumatoid arthritis, a painful, crippling disease.

Widespread osteoarthritis, in need of two total knee replacements, various other joint reconstruction necessary.

No pain meds nor pain management prescribed by doctors.

Currently taking moderate, fluctuating doses of prednisone along with 20 mgs. of methotrexate (a cancer drug) weekly.

Feelings of guilt over how this disease has affected my family.

Inability to engage in many previously enjoyed activities. This has led to a sense of loss.

Mother has been ill during this time and has endured 5 surgeries.

In the past 90 days the following has occurred:

Found a breast lump with lymph node swelling in the nearest armpit.

    Enlarged thyroid with thyroid lump.

    Have entered menopause.

Monthly income has dropped by more than half, with total income per month at less than 0 dollars. Very real possibility of homelessness.

Strange medical and emotional symptoms include panic attacks, night sweats, extreme fatigue, insomnia, irritability, frequent crying, increased joint and muscle pain, etc.

Feeling depressed and overwhelmed, I sought counseling. My therapist felt I was simply overly anxious and depressed, and recommended that I speak with the clinic psychiatrist. She felt he may prescribe something to ease my symptoms.

After only one hour with me, during which he asked only 10-15 questions to which I was not allowed to elaborate in my answer, he slapped me with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, wrote a prescription for anti-convulsants and sent me from his office.

Needless to say, this has caused additional stress, and I will be seeking a second opinion.

My question is, considering all that I have endured these past 4 years, is it possible that the diagnosis is grossly inaccurate?

Might one in my position be expected to suffer anxiety and depression, and experience similar physical and emotional symptoms?

Thank you for taking the time to read that.
    ((((Kerilyn))))

Thank you so much. For the past two weeks -- after receiving this diagnosis -- I have been so much more anxious and depressed. That of course has led to me questioning my own sanity even more -- I feel utterly dazed and confused.

Why don't I take pain meds? My rheumy doesn't prescribe them, so I sought out a GP in order that I may establish as a patient and be treated with pain meds or pain management through alternative methods such as hypnosis, acupuncture, biofeedback...

Of course, my first appointment with her came shortly after finding the breast lump. That was horrifying. -- all I could think of was what would happen to my kids.

I admit, I probably had a mental breakdown. If it hasn't yet happened, it's imminent. I'm normally a calm person, but this is too much.

I also feel that menopause and it's hormonal swings has only added to the distress. What a nightmare this has all been. Now I must find new doctors, tell my story again, keep seeking help. *sigh*

    • ANSWER:
I am an RN..while I am not going to offer medical advice based on this q alone I think Ambivalent has given you the BA so far..you need a second opinion very much and soon.

Being an RN has not made me any less likely to run into health care delivery debacles, either.

I do not care to go into my own details other than to say if I had not trusted my gut instincts and what I had learned both as a nurse and through my own research, more than once either myself or a family member would have received medications or treatments that would have been VERY harmful to us as later confirmed through testing or another physician and a proper diagnosis and course of treatement.

If your instincts are telling you that you have been misdiagnosed, then get a second or third opinion if necessary.

Can you have a uti for 7 months and not know?
I have been going to the doctors for several symptoms none of which were related to a uti. Here are my symptoms :D izzy Spells
    Foggy Vision
    Pain every where
    Tender to the touch
    Fevers that come and go
    Night/ Day sweats
    Cold
    Hot
    Insomnia
    Ears hurt
    Back hurts
swelling in right eye a lot
Feeling of something in my eyes a lot
Forgetfulness mainly of short term memory
    Sleepy
    anxiety
    Loss of appetite
    shortness of breath
    swollen gland in neck
Staph infections while pregnant with second child

They just now did a urine test and said I have a uti just curious can autoimmune disorders cause them? Can you show no signs of them? I had a positive ana test to confirm an autoimmune disorder just hoping that maybe this uti is the cause. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
As I understand it infections( UTI) are caused by a pathogen "virus, bacteria, yeast" as the case may be. You say "They just now did a urine test" . Do you think they waited to long? If so why haven't you spoken up sooner? You might consider going to another doctor, a different medical office. SS

  15. QUESTION:
Should I get a night stocking job?
It is New Year's Eve and I'm at home drinking alone. I've never had a girlfriend, and I don't have any real friends.

I graduated high school in the top of my class, but I have severe social anxiety that makes me very nervous around people.

I have a rare skin condition that causes me to develop hives when I sweat. I have seen many doctors and been diagnosed with cholinergic urticaria. There is no cure, but Benadryls provide me a few hours relief.

I used to pass my time playing online games. My family moved, and at my new house I do not have a good internet connection. Now I have nothing to do.

I have insomnia. When I go to bed at 4 am, I do not fall asleep until 6 am, even after downing a couple Benadryls.

I need something to do. I don't care how much I get paid. I only spend money on gas, Benadryl and cigarettes. I'd like an apartment some day but I still live with my parents.

I considered getting a cashier position, but I think the stress and physical trembling from talking to people all day would be too much for me.

Am I making a mistake by applying for a night stocking job?

    • ANSWER:
I don't think you are making a mistake by applying this night job. That is a step in the right direction even though there's no guarantee it will improve your life. I don't know how old you are, but the younger you are the more time you have to recover and live the kind of life you want....

I would definitely apply for any job you can get. Make sure to stay with the job as long as you can. Seek therapy. Look for opportunities to get out and do things you are interested in.

  16. QUESTION:
    What could these symptoms mean?
I have been to the doctor and he has referred me to a gastro-enterologist but they appointment isn't for another two months.

I feel really ill and have had these symptoms for two weeks.

I'm not sure if they are related or not. Any idea what might be the cause?

    - Loss of appetite
    - Diarrhoea
    - Stomach cramps
    - Nausea, especially in the morning (I'm not pregnant!)
    - Heart Palpitations
    - Insomnia + tiredness
    - I keep needing to swallow
    - Small itchy lumps - like mosquito bites - on the upper half of my body (I have had chicken pox!)
    - Intolerance to all food except soup and toast
    - Weight loss
    - Night sweats (occasionally)

Any ideas would be appreciated, I am very confused by how ill I have suddenly become.

  17. QUESTION:
People with Panic Attacks, i have a question please!?
Ok, so i have panic attacks, but they have always been very small and during the day. I took my 1st dose of zoloft 2 days ago, it caused insomnia BAD and i started getting hot flashes, sweats/chills, and shaking......

i stopped taking the pill (so i onyl took the 1 dose) and then when i went to bed last night, it was the same thing, the dizzy hot flashes and nervousness.....why did it happen 2 nights in a row??? is that normal for panic attacks??? is my mind like thinking its gonna happen so it does because it happend in the same situation the night before? thanks....

p.s. are there any, 'take as needed' pills for anxiety that help you relax? someone mentions like, valume? or valium?

    • ANSWER:
You're describing an allergic reaction to the Zoloft. 15% of people who take an SSRI such as Prozac get panic attacks. Call your doctor and tell him/her what you experienced.

As to the answer in your second paragraph, I believe that you had a panic attack because you felt like it was going to happen, so it did. Sometimes panic attacks can be brought on just by the fear of having one.

As to your third paragraph, there are helpful "as needed" pills to take for panic attacks. But they are only helpful if you have other tools to use to control your panic attacks. Then they can be really helpful. I went through medication and therapy to reach a point in my recovery so that I received useful tools to use in my recovery. I survived Hurricane Andrew, but I'm still afraid, and likely so, of severe thunderstorms. I live in a trailer, which makes it even worst. So to help with the anxiety, I do deep breathing and tell myself that I'm safe which I am once I evacuate to a safe house. But then I'm not afraid of putting one milligram of Ativan under my tongue to take the edge off of my anxiety when I need it. I hope you feel better and my best advice to you is to go through medication and therapy both.

People with panic attacks. I have a question please!?

    • ANSWER:
I had a panic attack in the shower. After my first very small attack I became extremely worried that it was going to happen again. I had a major one while driving and felt as if I was going to pass out or worse. I had to pull over. I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with panic attacks.

I have not had one sense then but I have suffered with anxiety. The thing that works for me is I have a phone buddy who I can call and talk to. I need to be distracted. If I am not distracted then I will not stop worrying about what is going on.

Also I figured out why this was going on. What was stressing me out to the point of having these attacks. For me, it the worry of my smoking habbit. I suffer with a stuffy nose and drainage in my throat caused from smoking. I then begin to worry that I can't breathe.

I don't take medicine because I believe I can beat this mentally sense it is a psychological problem. For some people this will not work and medicine is needed.

There is some over the counter stuff you can buy in the health stores for anxiety. My doctor recomened to me before going to a prescription.

I bought Natural Care Anxiety Relief. I used it in the begining and it seemed to help. I stopped using it because I want to beat this on my own. I do still have the bottle just incase though.

Panic attacks will seem horrible and will last up to 10 min. If you find yourself in this state or on the way to that state then try to convince yourself what is going on with you is only psychological and there is no danger.

For me coffee will make me feel as if I am going to have a panic attack. Coffee doesn't cause panic attacks but too much caffine can have a toxic effect on the body that is simiular to panic attacks.

Eat well, avoid caffine that alone may help you.

If you have not had a physical have one done. This will reasure you that physically you are fine. After the hospital did an EKG and breathing tests on me and told me I was fine that has helped me stay calmer.

      Good luck with you

  20. QUESTION:
Effects of Having One Ovary Removed?
Back in June my left ovary was removed, it was an emergency procedure and I had two surgeries done within 24 hours due to the complications. Since then I have been experiencing some concerning issues with my body.

They started out mild and have progressively gotten worse over time. Hot flashes, night sweats, some vaginal dryness, fatigue, severe mood swings, insomnia, difficulty concentrating/noticeable memory lapses, I suddenly have allergies, constant headaches (nearly every day), and loss of my sex drive. It was always very high and has gradually declined over the last six months. It is now to the point that I almost have an aversion to it and this greatly disturbs me. I've begun to think early menopause but I keep seeing that the loss of one ovary cannot cause an early onset.

I saw the dr in the beginning and was told all this was just me recovering from the surgeries. I have another appointment in January but would love to get some insight. My body is now a stranger to me and I am at a complete loss as to what is going on.

I am 28, on birth control, am not pregnant.

    • ANSWER:
Hmmm. Removal of one ovary typically does not result in menopause. However, it CAN happen in some cases. I know several women who have had that happen. And i had one ovary removed so my doctor raised this issue with me at that time (but it didn't happen to me). Perhaps the nature of the complications you had injured your one ovary? The symptoms you have are classic symptoms of surgical menopause. Do you find those symptoms to be worse during the week you are taking placebo pills in your birth control pack? It's actually pretty easy to test whether your ovary is working. You should get your hormones tested during your placebo week, preferably near the end of the placebo week--LH, FSH, E2. If your doctor scoffs at such testing, BE INSISTENT. If he still won't, then see another doctor, because his refusal would mean he's an a$$.

I hope this is not your situation. But if it is: the usual treatment is to take hormone replacement (not being on hormones is not an option at your age, for the sake of your health). Birth control pills count as hormone replacement. So you might end up having your doctor say that you should just continue taking birth control pills. But if you are feeling so badly even while taking birth control pills, then you need a higher dose of hormones. It is actually typical of someone your age who has gone through surgical menopause to need more than the usual menopausal dose of hormones to eliminate symptoms of menopause. So you might have to fight hard to get more. And you might have some challenges in figuring out your right combination of hormones, which will include testosterone. You should go to www.ipofa.org to get resources to help you to deal with this diagnosis. If fertility is of concern to you, then you will have to cope with that, too.

      Good luck!

    • ANSWER:
Obviously, I’m not a M.D., and it sounds like they’ve worked you up pretty good. I just have a few suggestions about lab work. Even if your M.D. states that he/she has done a specific test, ask for a copy of your results. Sometimes the doc’s don’t have time to look through all the numbers and won’t see trends (all borderline high’s for example), that you the patient might be able to see. So here it goes….

      sudden weight gain
gained a lot of belly weight
      increased body/facial hair growth (hirtuism)
head hair thinning/lots of breakage (alopecia)
      breakouts
      increased oil production
severe pelvic pain, left side only, pings and pangs
      severe depression/mood swings
      night sweats
      migraines
      loss of concentration

All of the above listed are signs of a hormonal imbalance. Sounds like PCOS to me. You don’t have to have cysts on your ovaries to have this disorder. It’s characterized by having multiple symptoms that can be followed up with lab tests as well. I would ask your M.D. for testosterone, aldosterone, FSH and LH levels as well as your lipid (cholesterol) panel. A lot of times when women have PCOS they are insulin resistant. That is the basis of the disease, it can lead to diabetes. Visit www.pcosupport.org for further information on symptoms and treatments.

blurry vision & decrease in eyesight (retinopathy)
passing out after eating (rebound hypoglycemia)
passing out if don’t eat (hypoglycemia)
falling asleep while driving/talking with people
      peeing every 20-30 minutes (polyuria)
      always thirsty (polydypsea)
      tingling limbs (neuropathy)

These are all right on the head for Diabetes mellitus. Ask your M.D. for a fasting blood glucose, a microalbuminuria (test for protein in your urine) along with a Hemoglobin A1c (3 month test for diabetes.) You could also buy a blood glucose meter from Wal-Mart or Walgreen’s (about ) and start checking yourself at home. Visit www.diabetes.org for more information.

      insomnia/then sleep for 12 hours
      fatigued all the time
      everything hurts. tissues/glands/joints/everything
severe pain in between shoulder blades

These all sound like fibromyalgia (especially pain between the shoulder blades) which is a chronic pain disorder. It is characterized by chronic pain and fatigue with bouts of insomnia.

      nausea
      sever constipation/then bouts of diarrhea
      passing undigested food

Fibromyalgia is often closely associated with irritable bowel disease. In fact I found a website that talks specifically about their correlation. Visit www.fibromyalgia-symptoms.org or www.fibromyalgia-symptoms.org/fibromyalgia_bowel.html

wake up with bloody nose/blood in nose every morning
      unexplained bruises

      Iron deficiency Anemia?

      new allergies/reactions to stuff

When people have a lot of autoimmune type problems, they will find that they often have food allergies, allergies to meds, ect.

      chest pain/anxiety

With everything that you are going through, I would probably have chest pain and anxiety as well! Hang in there! The good news is that most of these symptoms can be treated. The bad news is that PCOS and fibromyalgia are disorders…not diseases. Disease can be cured, disorders can not, but they can be managed. Many doctors are hesitant to treat disorders because the diagnosis is more subjective than objective and there are not always standards for treatment. Keep looking around from doc to doc. Sometimes I find that Nurse Practitioners or N.D. (naturopathic doctors?) are better at looking at the person as a whole rather than a disease.

      Good luck to you!

  22. QUESTION:
What could it be? Drs keep medicating but nothing helps.?
I am 28 and have been diagnosed and unsuccessfully treated for what seems like a lot of things and wonder if maybe they point to a different problem with a different treatment. Any thoughts?

I am desperate for answers, relief, and a life. I have been on different combinations of somewhere around 25 medications for these diagnoses and still find no relief. I was seeing an improvement about a year ago and actually picked up a hobby, but about 6 months ago everything started going downhill again and I am back to where I started. Medications either do nothing, keep me overly sedated or numb, start out great and then peter out, or cause side effects. Dr's just keep throwing more medications at me and I'm getting sick of being a toxic dump site.

Some of these diagnoses clash with each other, but every time they change my Dr the new person changes what they think I have. I have been diagnosed with: major depression, bipolar I, bipolar II, inattentive adhd, social anxiety, sensory processing disorder, generalized anxiety, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and seasonal affective disorder.

I am currently on Ambien, Remeron (which seems to counter act the Ambien but is supposed to help with sleep), Cymbalta, Depakote, and Ritalin (which isn't being very helpful either). I’ve tried every class of antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, benzodiazepines, stimulants, hypnotics, and anxiolytics.

I'm depressed, irritable (some times more than others), anxious, can't sleep a normal schedule, tired all the time even if I do end up getting adequate sleep. I'm also scared of things I know I shouldn't be afraid of (like aliens, monsters in woods, home invasions), have gruesome and pervasive thoughts of bad things happening to me or those I love, when I'm not on meds I have a short and explosive temper that usually ends with me hitting or throwing something. I have random, traveling pains that can feel like shooting nerve pain or aching muscles or joints. I have OCD like tendencies as well, I do this thing with my toes where I flick the big toe with the one next to it and can get stuck on it and do it so much that I get a blister or bleed, lately I have a problem with my thumbs with locking the joints and I don't know how to describe the rest of the thumb problem but the joints and muscles are getting really sore but I can't stop. I startle very easily and take a very long time to recover, sometimes my fingers will go numb from being startled by something dumb in a safe situation. If the temp in my bedroom isn’t spot on I get night sweats and chills. It’s hard to tell dream from reality and sometimes I have really vivid dreams. I had a sleep study a couple years ago and when I was getting ready to leave the technician said everything looked good but she noticed alpha wave intrusion, but that was the last ever said about that. Sometimes I will get this surreal feeling as if nothing around me is real. I’ll also have episodes where the lighting is either really dim or very bright and everything looks very crisp. I have no motivation at all. I hyperfocus on things that interest me but cannot move for others.

Here are some newer things that are troubling me because they seem to be getting worse. I can't keep my attention lately. I'll skip from one thing to another if my eye gets caught by something else, like news stories or websites. I can't keep my place while reading, I end up skipping ahead to read a sentence or two, then go back and find where I was reading before. My reading comprehension has gone way down, I sometimes have to read a sentence very, very slowly and deliberately a few times before I can move on. Sometimes I'll finish reading a paragraph and have no idea what I just read. I've started to put words into sentences that aren't there or changing the words that are. I've read headlines on a news site and will go back some time later and see if anythings changed and be surprised when the headline I read earlier about cats now says cars. Its hard for me to speak or even type because I will be trying to get my thoughts out and blank on a word, lose my train of thought, or just plain can't get the thought to my mouth or fingers. I feel dumb because I can't seem to learn as quickly as I have always been able to. Jokes tend to go over my head and I take things very literal. I'm also having serious problems with losing track of time, I'll be doing something and look up what feels like 10 minutes later and its been an hour.

I see a psychiatrist and have for 5 years. I have also seen a counselor, had a sleep study, and had normal blood values at my last draw. They have tested my thyroid but I think it was the simple TSH only test.

    Any ideas? Thanks so much.

  23. QUESTION:
Having every symptom of HIV but negative test at 21 weeks-just over 5 months...HELP?
had an exposure 51/2 months ago in healthcare where a droplet of blood went in to my eye. So I called the PEP hotline and spoke with about 6-7 Drs. all telling me that due to the low chances and me being pregnant they wouldnt recommend PEP chance of transmission is low. Anyways, we asked the patient of his status he states he didnt have anything but refused an HIV test. None the less the Docs felt that even if the pt had HIV such an inoculation would not cause disease. However, after the PEP window passed I lost my mind. I was convinced that the patient lied and I was doomed. Sure enough about 8 days later ARS started...I got loose stools for 2 days, Night sweats for about 2 weeks, Thrush on my tongue (confirmed), white patches on my tongue, hariy looking papilla and fissures on the tip of my tongue, Burning sensation in my esophagus and lips....And still 5 months later my symptoms persist and more have come about such as numbness in my thighs (femerol nerve) not sciatica, sores on my body that are healing slowly, shortness of breath, insomnia/ fatigue and all I can think about is that I am DYING of HIV. Despite all my symptoms all of my tests have been negative thus far...
Oral Swab at 3 weeks- NEG
I had a PCR-RNA test at 35 days- NEG; no virus detected; less than 48 copies/1.7 ml
Oral swab at 6 weeks- NEG
Antibody blood test for HIV 1/2, HEP C, Sypillis at 8 weeks- NEG
Antibody blood test for HIV 1/2, HEP C, Syphillis at 12 weeks- NEG
Antibody blood test for HIV 1/2, HEP C, Syphillis at 5 months and 1 week- NEG
    My questions are:
    1) Could pregnancy and extreme stress delay seroconversion?
    2) What about coinfection with Hep C?
    3) Can having Latent TB delay seroconversion?
    4) Everyone keeps tellling me that the 3 month test is conclusive but I cannot let go...HAS ANYONE YOU KNOW OR HEARD OF TESTED + PAST 3 MONTHS?
    5) And what of my symptoms? they are very strange and more like HIV than pregnancy-related...Should I expect them to just magically go away?
    6) Is testing out to 1 yr a thing of the past? The CDC states 6 mths as the last test...Is that 100% accurate?
    7) what would you suggest for me? I need to put this behind me before my baby is due in 1 month. PLEASE HELP!

    • ANSWER:
The test is almost 99.99999999999999999999999999999% conclusive@ 6 months. Your agony and stress may be what is causing all these symptoms. When you really believe you have something the mind begins to experience those symptoms; in other words, your mind is so ppower fullthat when you really really really believe you have something it makes your body eexperiencethose symptoms.

  25. QUESTION:
please help! benadryl withdrawal after sever overdose and seizures!?!?
i used to take between 800-2300mg benadryl every night and a few times i tried to come off it and ended up really ill for 1-2 weeks like major ill-nausea, cold sweats insomnia, twitching, unexplained bruising all over my body (HUGE bruises), non-stop burping, excessive mouth water, unable to stand up half the time.
last week i ended up having seizures due to a very high dose, 4 seizures in one night and spent like 10 hours on my bed shaking because if i tried to get up i had another seizure and i tried to tell people on msn i was having seizures to try and get help but i ended up typing nonsense for an hour til eventually people just gave up trying to work out what i was saying.
i cut off immediately after that but for some reason i havent been having withdrawal symptoms which is strange especially after taking enough to cause seizures. ive started feeling a bit sick and headachey today, could i be about to start some horrible delayed withdrawal? or could it just be cause im thinking about it but ive actually just been lucky and symptom free? please help im getting really worried at the prospect of withdrawal! i think maybe i should take a little bit to ease withdrawal but obviously i only want to if i need to but if i wait til i have full blown withdrawal its usually impossible to stop the symptoms for like a week no matter what i do :(

    • ANSWER:
Benadryl in high doses for an extended period is something that I don't think is well studied...usually it is something that people try once and then never do again due to its very frightening effects. I don't think it will be easy to find an answer to this because it is such a rare circumstance. The only thing I can reccomend is to go to a drug store and pick up some zyrtec, which is a prescription antihistamine that is now over the counter. As such, I am guessing that it is quite a bit more powerful than benadryl, so if you do end up going into withdrawals it may be able to curtail some or all of the symptoms, without needing to take a massive dose as you have been doing with the benadryl. Just to be safe, you should also contact or go see a doctor as this seems like a very serious case. Good luck.

    PLEASE HELP! withdrawal?!?
i used to take between 800-2300mg diphenhydramine every night and a few times i tried to come off it and ended up really ill for 1-2 weeks like major ill-nausea, cold sweats insomnia, twitching, unexplained bruising all over my body (HUGE bruises), non-stop burping, excessive mouth water, unable to stand up half the time.

i originally was going to but it just wasnt happening.. like when i was having seizures i thought i should go to hospital but obviously i couldnt walk there since everytime i stood up i had a seizure and i couldnt communicate to tell anyone what was going on. by the time i could explain it was saturday afternoon so i couldnt see a doctor i didnt see much point going to hospital and saying i had seizures the day before since by that point i was fine and theyd just be like 'well wtf do you wants us to do about it now?'

    • ANSWER:
Diphenhydramine is as close to a barbituate as you can get with it being an over the counter medication. You need, I mean NEED, medical supervision to come off this drug successfully without hurting yourlsef permanently. Please seek medical advice ASAP.

In fact, I hope you've already gone to see a dr. by the time you read my reply here.

  27. QUESTION:
what medication could be causing this?
I'm taking 40mg of fluoxetine in the morning,
and between 75 and 250mg of Seroquel at night.
Most nights I wake up every hour and dream all night, and when i wake up i'm sweating horribly but so cold.
However, after 6 years of insomnia, this is better than not sleeping, but I was just wondering what the sweating could be from?

  28. QUESTION:
I cannot for the life of me figure out why I can't sleep?
So about three weeks ago, I had what I thought were UTI symptoms that were keeping me up. After a few days, I went to the doctor. The test was negative, but they gave me two different antibiotics anyway and the symptoms cleared up, but I still couldn't sleep. I went back to the doctor and they gave me Abien CR (6 days worth) to sleep and it worked, but I took the last dose night before last and last night I couldn't sleep again. At this point, they had given me a pelvic exam and pap smear for the UTI symptoms (before they cleared up, both normal) and a blood test for diebetes, thyroid condition, and high cholesterol. I do NOT have diebetes or a thyroid condition, but I do have high cholesterol which is genetic. So I have to eat really healthy, take a fiber supplement, and in a few weeks they will probably give me a medication. But I don't see how this is keeping me from sleeping. Could high cholesterol cause insomnia? Do I just have to get used to sleeping without the Ambien? I also had to pee a bunch of times last night, but that happened a few other nights (but not every night) and like I said I tested negative for diebetes. The only thing I've been doing different lately is a new deodorant and I don't sweat at all unless I work out. Could that be it? (A shot in the dark I know). Maybe because I sweat less I pee more? Does anybody know? I'm at my wits end here!!
well, i do not have pain during intercourse, i don't have to go a lot during the day, i do not have bladder pain, and this has not been every night.

(fatal familial) insomnia or not? Any advice?
I am 23 years old, and for a month already I am having troubles falling asleep, which now became a TOTAL insomnia. I don't know what is causing it. I am not under stress, I am tired, I get in the bed, but no matter how tired I am, I can't fall asleep for at least 4-5 hours, and I sleep 2 hours MAX. These last couple of days it dropped to 0 hours! Now I feel horrible....Like I am about to collapse. I feel like my whole body is shaking, I am sweating a lot, and I feel unstable, like my balance went downhill.

I am really scared because of fatal familial insomnia. Do you think I have that? I think nobody had it in my family, but I have a feeling I am the first one who developed this crap. Any advice? I heard that the sufferers from FFI have many nights of no sleep at all, and this is EXACTLY what I have now, and it's 3 nights in a row. If it happens tonight as well, what should I do?

  30. QUESTION:
Could I have a sporadic familial insomnia (sfi) ?
I am 20 years old, and for a month already I am having troubles falling asleep, which now became a TOTAL insomnia. And it all began out of the blue. I felt this "dizziness" and "instability" prior to the insomnia as well sometimes.......is that pointing out SFI too?

I am really scared because of fatal familial insomnia, a genetic prion disease. Do you think I have that? I think nobody had it in my family, but I have a feeling I am the first one who developed this crap. Any advice? There is a form of that which occurs sporadically, and hit anyone. I heard that the sufferers from FFI/SFI have many nights of no sleep at all, and this is EXACTLY what I have now, and it's 3 nights in a row. If it happens tonight as well, what should I do?

    • ANSWER:
I saw a TV show about SFI, so I understand your concern, but it's so rare it is highly highly unlikely you have it. Only about 100 people have been diagnosed worldwide. You should visit your physician. He will run a blood test to screen for various contributing factors, and /or he will likely recommend a visit to a sleep disorder clinic.

I am 20 years old, and for a month already I am having troubles falling asleep, which now became a TOTAL insomnia. I don't know what is causing it. Can sporadic fatal insomnia really hit anyone?

    • ANSWER:
      Hey Batman,

You're too young to fit the profile, according to the wiki on this illness (only heard of it in passing before today). Looks like there is a genetic test for this. Seems very unlikely though - it looks like it's a very rare disease.

In any case, it does say that lifestyle changes can impact quality of life for the better. This is good advice regardless - and is the best advice for the most likely possibility, which is just that you have delayed onset insomnia and are panicking about it.

Not that that's an easy thing - I know from personal, lifelong experience with the more common ailment I mentioned.

      Some things to try:

Paradoxical intention. Don't stay in bed for ages tossing and turning. If you're there for more than 30 mins, get up and leave the room. This dissociates sleeplessness/anxiety with your sleep environment.

Instead, just get up and leave the room. Do something boring and calming. (Probably no TV or anything really active or fascinating, though.) ***Don't even *try* to fall asleep.***

When you feel yourself getting tired, crawl into bed and let what happens happen. (I sometimes crash on the couch, it's not the worst thing in the world. Doesn't help with associating bed with sleep, but it reduces anxiety about falling into sleep.)

Keep a worry book. When you get overwhelmed with emotionally charged thoughts, write them down. Expunge them. This really, really helps. Also has the benefit of tiring you out, as you work to describe your feelings.

At night: dim or turn off lights. When you're up and can't sleep, just do things by a nightlight or very low light lamp. Darkness cues your body to prepare for sleep. Conversely, get at least 30 minutes of outdoor light as soon as you wake up. It'll sort out your body clock. Personally, I've just got what's called a 'dawn simulator' alarm clock. It slowly turns a 100w bulb on over 30 mins.

Your room. Make sure it's dark and comfortable. Look at different pillows, blankets, and mattresses. Firmer is better for you, btw. Your room should be cool, as well. This also calms your body down. And, keep the room tidy - mess creates stress.

Wake up at the same time 7 days a week. No matter how little sleep you had the night before. This is, again, to regulate your body clock.

'So what?' Try to accept the consequences of not sleeping. Meaning, if you just can't sleep and are worried about it making the next day tough, just think, 'what's the worst that will happen?' Probably nothing! And if you are uber tired, go for a relaxing walk in daylight (the sooner you get up the better - avoid exercise in the late afternoon or evening - exercise in the morning will be helpful). Eat carbs, if you have to.

No caffeine after 3pm, either. Avoid napping.

You are very unlikely to be the victim of anything other than insomnia. Which can definitely hit people all at once. What changed a month ago? New course, job, living environment? Stressful interpersonal event? That problem might need resolving.

In the meantime, just accept it, for now, while trying some of the techniques I described.

  32. QUESTION:
How to get over nightmares and insomnia, inability to sleep.?
I don't want to get into details about what is causing them, but I had something happen to me. I guess it was traumatic. I'm fine during the day, at work, out and about, but at night it is horrible. I have the same reoccuring dream every single night. That one traumatic experience is happening in the dream, but instead of myself being a victim, it is loved ones, and I can't save them. What does it mean? I only sleep about 30 minutes at a time, and wake up in a cold sweat. I can't go to bed at any set time. Since I only sleep about a half hour at a time, waking up and going back to bed throughout the night, 8 hours of sleep isn't enough. I feel drained all day. It's terrible. How do I get over these nightmares....how do I get back to sleeping normally. Hopefully someone can come up with something other than "talk to someone" since that won't do anything for someone like me.

    • ANSWER:
You need to get rid of this experience. I know it's easier said than done, but it sounds like you need to rid yourself of some emotions that are eating you alive. Try writing poetry or stories about the experience and the emotions you feel when you think about it. It doesn't matter if they're good poems or not...just get your feelings out. You could even just write down what you're feeling, like a journal entry kind of thing. If writing isn't for you, talk to a close friend that you know could relate to you and help you through whatever you're going through. You could also get some sleeping pills...but I would avoid that right now, if I were you. The most important thing to do is get OUT what you're feeling, not to cover it up.

  33. QUESTION:
HELP!!! My 8 year old is suddenly not sleeping well...possibly sleep insomnia?
If anyone can help me or give me any past experiences you've had that would be awesome. My 8 year old is a great kid. I've never had any problems with him EVER on sleeping or behavior or anything. Last week he woke up screaming to the top of his lungs...I seriously thought someone was in his room beating him to death. I went in there and he was wide eyed pointing at his door saying he saw some monster. I reassured him there was nothing there. When I was talking to him he looked and acted not like himself. He wouldn't look me in the eyes and was not making any sense...I figured he was still half asleep and laid with him until he went back to sleep. Well...the next night he didn't want to go to sleep in his bed. Sleeping in our bed is not an option for my kids...I did that years ago with him when he was about a year old and told myself once I got him broke we wouldn't let him sleep in our bed again. I don't think that's an issue...Anyway...the second night he said he saw footprints and eyes under his closed door that he shut. I'm not 100% sure if he ever feel asleep or stayed up terrified from the night before...but he wouldn't go to sleep after that. I laid down with him in his room until he feel asleep that night. Now, every night is getting worse. He hasn't had anymore dreams that he can remember but for instance last night...when it came time for bed he started crying. I put him in his bed and reassured him he would be okay and told him monsters weren't real...left his light on like usual but he would NOT give up. He wouldn't even lie down on his pillow. He started shaking and screaming and I seriously thought he was going to give himself a heart attach. He's got a appt with his pediatrician next week for a regular check up and NO DOUBT I'm talking to them about this...but I just don't know if I can wait another week and a half to get some answers. Does anyone have any ideas or know what could be causing this? I know that the one dream must have scared the living daylights out of him and he doesn't want to go back to sleep to relive any of that again but the extent that he is going thru to NOT go to sleep is crazy...like I said he starts shaking and sweating and talking out of his head BEFORE he even goes to sleep now....and it takes me or my husband to lie down with him until he falls asleep which takes at least an hour of consulting with him before he actually falls asleep....

sunday was my last day of suboxone..i was only on it for a week..it is now thursday and i am just experiencing terrible withdrawls now! Literally just the creepy crawlys, shakes, sweating, insomnia, and seriously weird heartbeat..its really light and slow for a few beats then i cant feel it at all then its fast. I took two tylenol pm's them a xanax ( poison control center said it was fine). My question is why are these withdrawls coming on so late. Also i took the xanax i took just now, then 2 days ago i took one then the day before. Is taking 3 xanax in 48 hours a cause for withdrawls? Also is this normal withdrawls from suboxone seeing as i was only on it for a week. This is just so scary

I Did taper low i didnt even start that high i tapered down from 1.5mg of suboxone down to nothing my last dose was sunday and i just got the worst wd of my life last night 4 days later

  35. QUESTION:
slow methadone taper while pregnant???? want my baby healthy!!! stressed.?
I am 13 weeks pregnant right now and on 16mg of methadone [i was detoxing from 65mg before i was pregnant]. When i was younger i was addicted to drugs....I have been clean for OVER 2 years now. I found out i was pregnant when i was only 4 weeks and i immediatley stopped smoking cigarettes and drinking caffeine. I am serious about having a healthy baby and have done all i can. I know it is not an ideal situation [trust me i feel soooo stupid for ever getting on these meds] but MY BIRTH CONTROL FAILED and i am in a supportive relationship, have good family and finances and don't believe in abortion. I was also prescribed 3mg of xanax daily for 4 years when i found out i was pregnant and so i went to the hospital and totally detoxed off the xanax with help from my OBGYN [it was HELL but i am that motivated so PLEASE do not say "oh but methadone is better than heroin so you must stay on it" because, well, a LOT of stuff is "better" than heroin but that doesnt mean its good for baby and i KNOW i would never put drugs in my body...i made it through the xanax withdrawal hell so i know for a fact i am strong enough to get off the methadone. I was on 18mg when i found out and the clinic i go to said they would NOT allow me to taper/detox and would call children services if i did and my OBGYN also said it wasn't a good idea. However, after they saw me get off the xanax succesfully and finally saw that i really am trying my OBGYN AND the doctor at the clinic said i should have no problem getting off the methadone completly before baby is born! :) They also treat me different now, i think before the detox they just thought i was another "junkie" and would use drugs if i got sick.. Anyways, i went down to 16mg 4 days ago and was a little uncomfortable [very very minor] but then last night i felt pretty sick and this morning i had the sweats and diarrehea, insomnia and gooseflesh and that very anxiou/skin crawling feeling. Now I can take it, its only nighttime and early morning but i worry about the baby. I am afraid to go to my docotor because i am afraid they will tell me to quit detoxing without even looking into how they can make it better [slower maybe?]. I wish my doctors would take this more seriously...i feel like they really don't care that much about my baby because of my past and its SOOO frustrating because i want my baby to have the best start in life as possible. Has anyone out there tapered off methadone while pregnant? I really want to know if there is anything else i can do to make it better...like shouldn't the doctor be seeing me more than usual, and shouldnt the clinic really be monitoring how i am feeling? I would feel better if i knew they were monitoring the babys growth. and is a little bit of withdrawal ok or can it cause development problems etc? Obviously if an OBGYN says my baby is not developing right etc i would stop the detox.....and trust me the doctors would NOT of let me detox if it was really bad...but they also don't know i am getting a little sick. Also for those of you who think so having a baby on methadone is NOT 100% safe, there is low birth weight/dev issues and obviously the worst...weeks worth of withdrawl [and it doesnt matter how low your dose it]! I just cannot imagine seeing somone administer morphine to my baby or it getting so sick!!! I am SOOOO MAD AT MYSELF for getting on methadone and i feel like a horrible person. DO NOT want to have a baby born on any drug if i dont have to. I was wondering if it would be safe to just go to the hospital and have a medically supervised detox? Anyone do that? Cause the xanax hospital detox worked. Maybe i will go down 1mg at a time instead of 2 since i am so low now. Im freaking out...any knowledge about this would be helpful, but PLEASE dont be rude....im doing EVERYTHING i can and i dont believe in abortion.

    • ANSWER:
You are doing the right thing by coming off it slowly, you and your baby would probably go into shock if you stopped and then you risk putting to much stress on your baby,
Your doctors are only interested in your health without YOU your baby wouldn't survive anyway
Anxiety, sickness, shaking and feeling so hot you start sweating can just be a sign of pregnancy (I have had all of them lol)
Take things easy, and remember you are changing your life for the better for you and your unborn baby
Congratulations and I wish you all the best for your future :)

  36. QUESTION:
    Sleep problems, please help?!?
Hello, i've recently been having some major problems sleeping, i'm not sure whether it's a form of insomnia, but here goes... I generally get around 8 hours of sleep each night, before college the very next morning, but, every now and then, I wake up in the middle of the night, screaming, panicking, sweating, running about, as if sleepwalking but i'm awake, but somewhat uncontrollably.

My dreams generally consist of the same things, it's either a man at the end of my bed, not necessarily the same man, but as if he's trying to get me, I wake up just before he manages to get near me, and then I just run out the room screaming in the hallway. Tonight, infact it was rather different, I have a cat, he sometimes comes in via my bedroom window at the top, and he was sleeping on my bed the last I can remember, now, I was slowly dozing off to sleep, and I got off around midnight, and all of a sudden, I started to have a dream that was kind of weird, can't really explain it, but it was basically as if something was on my light, it was either the following things:

My cat was asleep on my bed, and another cat was by the window, thus causing my cat to go nuts, then me in turn...

Something else came into my room, animals wise, bats, squirrels, etc etc, and that freaked me out.

My cat moved, freaked me out and then he jumped off, thus causing movement around my light? Possibly...

Regardless of any of the above, I now have insomnia, absolutely shattered but can't sleep due to the fact I am so nervous and somewhat antiscipating something but am not sure what.

I'm really not sure what to do, it may just be something on my mind, making me go a little loopy, or something else, if somebody could help me, I would very much appreciate it.

  38. QUESTION:
Depression / Anxiety? this sucks ;(?
Hello, i have been having this problem for about 3 months now. I have been seeing a physician and psyciatrist/psycologist for anxiety and depression. I am very new to anxiety, so its hard to believe that its "all in my head" because of the physical effects it has had on me. I actually just wanted to post my problems and see what suggestions anyone might have on my condition because seeing my doctors has been really dragging, ( i am currently going to the VA clinic) i spent 5 years in the army, two of those years in Iraq, i didnt go through anything really tramatic although i did have many stressful times.

My first problem starting about 3 months ago, was one day i just felt "weird" , lightheaded, dizzy, nausea , mild chest pain. I went to the hospital to see what might be wrong and the doc diagnosed me with anxiety, although they didnt run many test on me. So for the next 4 days i could not sleep at all, and woke up with nightmares and sweating. I then got a prescription for xanax, and i only used it for helping me sleep at night (1mg). my insomnia lasted about a month, until i learned how to fall asleep without pills. but i still until this day i can only sleep about 5-7 hours a night, and many morning i wake up with heart palpitations. and i cannot get back to sleep or relax. To attempt countering this problem of mine, i try to exercise which i believed would kill the problem, but it seems like 80% of the time i do any physical activities i feel depressed during or after whatever im doing. a lot of times i feel hopeless or a bit sad and start thinking about life after death and such things that would cause me to be a little bit scared. also since my problem started, i have had Cloudy urine with considerable amount of mucus in it, and that also had me worried a lot, but my doctor had me get blood and urine checked, it showed no problems, he sent me to the cardiologist to have a holter monitor and echo cardiogram done, i get the results wednesday but i dont think there was any problems. Breathing has also been a problem i have from time to time, but im working on that. I keep thinking that eating a lot of sugar or certain foods is causing me to feel short of breath but idk. sorry if this question feels long and drawn out , but i suck at typing up stuff like this. thanks for any comments.

    • ANSWER:
I think you got yourself a good doctor. Whenever I have a patient in my private practice that complains of anxiety and physiological symptoms that mimic cardiogenic issues, I make sure that they get a full medical workup and subsequent medical clearance first. What I mean is, anxiety can have actual physiological symptoms such as palpitation, increase perspiration, lightheadedness, and dizziness. Some folks also experience tingling of fingers and lips (which are mostly from hyperventilation).

The reason why I do that is because I don't want to later find out that what the patient was perceiving as anxiety attacks were actual cardiac problems that went untreated while I was treating her for anxiety. So, I make sure that my patients with anxiety do not have any possible underlying medical issues that may be the actual cause of those symptoms.

Psychiatry and psychology has various treatment methods that work quite well in controlling the symptoms of anxiety. Remember, all human beings experience anxiety. It, however, becomes a disorder when the anxiety interferes in daily living. So, take heart and stick to the treatment. You'll see find yourself feeling better.

  39. QUESTION:
What could be wrong with me?
I made a list of the symptoms:
    - Loss of appetite and feeling bloated after only a little food (I only eat one meal a day because I never get hungry)
    - Constant thirst
    -Neck and back pain/stiffness
    - Insomnia (restless and wide awake all night)
-Fatigue (most likely because of the insomnia)
    - Overly emotional, feel like crying for no reason and mood swings
    - Hot Flashes that make me pour sweat
    - Running out of breath faster than normal with physical activity
    - Sharp head pains that come and go quickly and move around my head, but are usually towards the front and sometimes make my eye hurt or feel pressured

Those are all the things I've noticed lately that seem strange. I haven't been feeling sick really, It just feels like something isn't right and I have no idea what could cause all of that, does anyone know? Im a teenager and I'm fairly healthy, I do have asthma, and a history of anxiety but I don't think that has anything to do with the way I feel.

    • ANSWER:
If you are not able to sleep for the whole night, for more that two nights, consult a doctor. These things aren't supposed to happen at least for a teenager. It is difficult to draw conclusions, but trust me, there will be a very simple remedy for it( which the doctor will prescribe). But in situations like these, it is best if someone experienced(in life) handled it.When i say someone experienced, it does not mean someone who is like a year older than you, but someone like your parents or a Councillor or a doctor. If they do not have a solution, they will know what to do and will guide you there.
      Get well soon.

  40. QUESTION:
Why is my vagina so outrageous? (Please help!)?
This is a really long question, but I have a really big problem so I would love it if any of you could help me. Preferably someone who has had similar issues, or maybe someone who is a doctor.

Okay, I basically have every symptom you could imagine in my vagina right now and I need to know what could be causing all of this. I'm going to start from the beginning. I'm 18 years old and I've been having periods since I was 11. The first 3-4 years were completely normal. I was having periods every four weeks, and I had normal clear discharge in between.

Sometime around 8th or 9th grade I started having yellow and sometimes brown discharge. My vagina was also very itchy and it took on a bad odor. I think I was under the impression that this was normal, so I never said anything about it. At the end of 9th grade, I started masturbating, but I'm pretty sure the discharge and itching came first so I'm not sure if the two are related or not.

During my sophomore year my periods started becoming irregular, but only slightly, like I would miss a period now and then. No big deal. Junior year I was taking advanced classes and started getting really intensely stressed out with my workload. I developed insomnia, and I would stay up all night writing papers for school. I was averaging 30 minutes - 4 hours of sleep a night, and it was really starting to affect my health. During the worst part of it (January-February) I would have fainting spells. It was also at this time that my periods got really irregular.

Early junior year I was having my period every 3 months, and between December and June I didn't have a period for 6 months. Then when I got it in June I bled for 6 weeks without stopping. Since then I've had periods every 2-4 months, and my periods have become stranger, like there will be large dark clumps that come out when I pee, like maybe an inch long. I saw my doctor in May but they couldn't come up with an explanation for my missing period. I'm a virgin so there is no way I could have been pregnant. The doctor gave me a pregnancy test anyways and confirmed it. I also had a ultrasound done of my uterus and they couldn't find anything. I wouldn't let the doctor do any tests inside my vagina because I wasn't comfortable with that. I've attributed the whole period situation to stress. So that is my period issue.

I have a whole other issue with my general vaginal health, which I kind of touched on before but not completely. This is my main issue: My vagina feels very unhealthy, but I don't know what is causing this. My underwear are always soaked through with discharge, to the point where I sometimes have to change my underwear in the middle of the day. I've used panty liners but I just soak through those and it's annoying to have to change them all the time so I usually don't use them. The appearance of my discharge varies. One day it will be thick and yellow, sometimes it's just clear and really wet, and sometimes it will be brown. Usually yellow though. I don't have anything whitish or cottage cheese-like discharge which is what I have heard happens with yeast infections. My discharge also has a terrible odor. Until very recently I thought that everyone's vagina smells bad but I've done some research and have found out that it shouldn't smell at all if it's healthy. Is this true? My vagina smells a bit like vinegar, sweat, and cheese...but it's not really a fishy smell, which I've heard of people having. I can usually smell my vagina through my clothes while I'm sitting down, so it's really strong. And I always feel wet down there. The worst part is the itchiness. My vagina itches all the time, and sometimes it is really unbearable and I can't scratch it when I'm outside. When I'm alone I scratch it a lot and sometimes it hurts and burns from so much scratching. My anus also gets itchy sometimes, but it's not as bad as my vagina. All of this has become very difficult to deal with lately and I don't know what to do.

I've recently tried using Vagisil wipes and I will feel relief for about 20 minutes and then I will be even more itchy. So that didn't work. I've never really known how I should wash my vagina. I tend to be reluctant to spend to much time cleaning that area. I'll usually swipe my sponge through, and rinse it off. Is that enough? Could all of these problems be from masturbating? I mostly just use my fingers when I do it, but sometimes I use random household objects. Could I have gotten an infection from doing this? I've suspected this to be the cause and have tried refraining from masturbating to see if things clear up but nothing has happened. I think things actually get worse. I haven't masturbated in about five weeks now, which is the longest I've gone without it and my vagina has been itching worse than ever.

What can I do??? I haven't had health insurance for the past year, but now I'm in college and I have a really basic insurance plan through the college so I could probably s

Oh, this is clearly Bacterial Vaginosis. There are excellent natural cures for it - and it would be recurring until and unless you really cure this.

Don't blow up your pocket using medication. I recommend you try the solution that my wife's friend had tried - the natural cure mentioned here:

  41. QUESTION:
I am looking for possible answers for what is causing my nervousness, shaking hands, head, fatigue and headace?
I have been experiencing a number of physical symptoms for which my doc. cannot find answers. In addition to those listed above, I have been having extreme sweating upon minimal exertion (coming particularly from my scalp), weight gain (i am already overweight), swelling facial areas - particularly sinus areas. I am extremely tired, awake groggily and slowly and some nights experience insomnia. I have always had migraine headaches. Originally they were the traditional ones with auras, pounding head pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound etc. About 15 yrs. ago I had one that lasted between 2 -3 months and was different in nature. At that time I went on a very strict anti-migraine diet, stayed in bed and wore sunglasses if in any light, even during the day. After that time I did not seem to have any troubles, added some foods back in my diet until I was able to eat most things. But recently, last yr. or so these other type of headaches have begun. Now there is little actual pain, but still aura (sometimes), sensitivity to sound and light, out of body experience as well as the other symptoms I have already listed. I would welcome any info or anyone who has had similar experiences to give my some insight.

  42. QUESTION:
Why do I have such strange side effects after surgery?
I had Peritonsillar abscesses along with my left tonsil removed 1 week ago today but since the surgery I have had particularly odd side effects. These include: insomnia, loss of appetite, sore/numb in my gum teeth and tongue, strange swelling on the tongue (vertical lines that look like thick veins wrapping around the entire edge of the tongue), difficulty focusing, rapid heart beat, sweating, shortness of breath.

The most noticeable problem is the insomnia. Every since waking up from the anesthesia I have not had a complete night of sleep. I always feel like I am on the verge of falling asleep but then randomly it feels as if it were the middle of the day with plenty of energy to spare.

Are these normal side effects? and what is causing them? could it be from the general anesthesia? or maybe from my antibiotic (AMOX TR-K CLV)?

the swelling and and other side effects in mouth area may be due Anastasia if they gave you one orally

  44. QUESTION:
Not being able to sleep is ruining my life!?
I haven't technically been diagnosed for insomnia... but I'm like 99.8% sure I have insomnia. I've had it for a few years, but it just started recently getting a whole lot worse.

I am a freshman in college, and for the past 5 months, I've probably been 20-30 min. late to my first class every day, or I slept through it accidentally and didn't go at all. But that's because I don't hear my alarm clocks go off. And I set 3 alarm clocks every night. They're right beside me, and yet I still can't hear them because I'm too exhausted from staying up so late the night before. At this very moment, it's 3:39 am, and I do not feel tired one bit.

I've thought up a few ideas of why I choose not to at least try and fall asleep...
    1. When I was little, I had TONS of surgeries on my left ear because I was deaf in that ear. I HATED getting put under for surgeries. And I actually just recently got 2 ear surgeries and my wisdom teeth taken out in the past 2 years. That scared the crap outta me. When I had my ear surgery 2 years ago, the night I came home, I had a nightmare about being put under and I could hear the nurses and doctors going crazy saying, "Help! Someone help! We're losing her!" and I could hear my beeping heart rate meter getting faster and a bunch of other beeps were going off. And I couldn't do anything about it because I was paralyzed by the anesthesia... I woke up sweating, gasping for air, and crying. I slept with my mom that night. So, maybe I'm just afraid of not being able to wake up again or I'm afraid of having another horrific nightmare.
    2. I had a huge move from Utah to Missouri about 3 years ago. I HATE moving, especially states. Well, I never had a lot of friends in Utah or Missouri. I started looking online. Long story short... I met a guy, fell in love with him, but he took advantage of my young body, and I will never forget it. Well, my parents found out, and out of spite, I sent that guy my address.... The biggest mistake of my life. I haven't heard from him or seen him since then, but the first few months after sending him my address were scary times. I couldn't sleep because I thought he was gonna come in my window, rape me, and/or murder me.
    3. I was diagnosed with ADD last year, and ever since then I've been taking Vyvanse every single day. It's really helped me get through my day at school and work and just to stay on task. I love it. But my psychiatrist did say in the beginning that it may cause me to not be able to sleep as well as I used to. Maybe it has something to do with that as well.
    4. Also, things just constantly run through my mind aaaallllllll the time when I lay in bed at night.I'm just so stressed out about every single thing that goes on in my life. It's awful.

Also, because of my fear of going under, I refuse to take sleeping pills. I tried Melatonin once, but I was so scared when I felt the effects of it hitting me. I didn't like it AT ALL. NO WAY am I trying sleeping pills ever again.

Is there any other way I can defeat this and get my life back?

Does anyone else suffer from this?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
"Cognitive Behaviour Therapy" would be perfect for you, excuse the psychological title of the therapy, it isn't at all scary or intrusive, the therapist will simply examine all factors such as your vast medical record and then through discussions help you understand pre cursors that are causing your inability to sleep. The good news is you probably don't have insomnia as the condition is usually caused by irregularities in the sleep centre of the brain which is largely neurobiological in nature. From what you describe it is possible you have developed a fear response to sleep which usually results in you drifting off at times when your body becomes exhausted which results in you sleeping in and missing college etc...there is nothing drastically wrong with you so don't worry, having said that I understand that the ordeal is very real and alarming to you.

with regards Vyvanse it is a very good drug but sometimes the drug might not suit all people. A lesser dosage or a different drug may be needed as taking this one seems to be effecting your ability to sleep, CBT as mentioned above has worked on disorders ten times as bad as yours and meant that many patients have become absolutely undependant on medication through a structured and balanced plan set out by their therapist.

Seek a second opinion, the problem seems to be as a result of many environmental factors and attitudes and fears to past treatments. CBT is designed specifically to the patient and you might find it is a great way to get that balance you crave back into your life.

Realising the things that cause the anxiety and understanding the processes that are occurring during these times of worry can in itself make you more tuned in to whats going on and can help you realise when to stop and take a minute to clear your mind.

Hope this helps, please do get a second opinion as the prescription of certain drugs is often a quick fix for troubles that a "talking therapy" could remedy in a month or two !!

      regards

  45. QUESTION:
So how do you like my story?
The smell of freshly mown grass.
The wind in her hair, cooling the sweat on her neck.
The number fourteen behind her best friend, staring her in the face.
Her pink flip-flops barely matching her white shirt and dyed hair.
    Cause what angel wears pink?
Joe Brooks’ smooth voice flows into her ears as she softly sings.
Behind her two “twinkies” splash water at each other.
In front of her some fifth grader smacks his head on the seat, laughing like a “retard on cocaine.”
She puts her pen in her mouth, smiles at her bestie, and switches the song to The Friday Night Boys.
Four seats back a fellow sophomore talks to the new kid, from Virginia, about his brother’s homecoming.
Her hair continues to blow in the wind, coming through the bus windows.
    “You look like an Angel.”
Her best friend’s red hair clashes with her brilliant-blonde dyed hair so much.
    As do they, themselves.
    But they’re best friends, non-the-less.
They have been since third grade.
She used to be like her bestie, one-upon-a-time.
But then she hit a wrong crowd, and almost completely ruined her life.
    “You look like an Angel.”
His voice rings through her ears, like crack in an addicts veigns.
He was her addiction, after all.
    “You look like an Angel.”
The one and only time he ever told her that made her heart thump faster than a hummingbird’s.
The song switches to ‘For Miles Around’ by People on Planes.
    It fit the moment perfectly.
    Her thoughts, at least.
“No one but you, for miles around.”

Three hours later she was piling pills in her hand.
One for depression. Two for the pain. One for bipolar. Two for her heart. And one for the insomnia.
    She stared at her fore-arm.
    Her left fore-arm.
    It started this whole thing.
    Her stupid arm.
She’d cut it off if she could.
If it wasn’t for her left arm, she wouldn’t have gotten addicted to mutilating herself.
She wouldn’t have been dragged to the hospital, and gotten two prescriptions for medication.
One for depression. One for bipolar.
Then they made her do a physical, which revealed her heart condition.
    Another prescription for her heart.
    And when her body started attacking itself from being untreated for so long;
    Another prescription for the pain.
She didn’t doubt they’d put her on another medication that did absolutely nothing, sooner or later.
She’d hardly cared about the insomnia medication; she’d been on it for so long now.
At the age of 15 her life was already ruined.
“No sports. No extraneous activities for 3 hours after you’ve taken your medication. No more concerts, they’ll make your heart worse and may unregulate your sleep. And certainly no more illegal drugs.”
She never did illegal drugs. She’d tried marijuana, but there wasn’t anything for her there.
It was all a part of her “image”. The image they gave her.
The image he fought with all his life against.
    Until he left.
With only six states between them, you’d imagine he’d visit once in a while.
    At least for holidays.
Or at least call for her, not her brother.
But things never work out the way you imagine.
    She’s learned that.
    “You look like an Angel.”
It was a fire drill when he said it.
    They were in music appreciation.
The only class they had together, besides lunch.
It was an unusually nice day for it being October.
The sun seemed to shine right on her.
She was wearing a white shirt.
The only one she owned without stains from cleaning in it.
She had on black pants, tight. The tightest she’d ever owned.
Her hair was pure blonde on the top, with dark black underneath.
    “You look like an Angel.”
    Her heart beat wildly.
    Which caused her chest pains.
But she ignored them, hoping they were from nerves instead of her heart.
This is what he did to her.
He’d be the death of her without knowing it.
But I guess they’d be perfect together.
Considering his heart condition, as well.
    “You look like an Angel.”
A black and white one, she’d guessed.
The first and only black and white angel she’d ever heard of.
    But she’d take the compliment.
    “You look like an Angel.”
    Her chest hurt horribly.
    But she’d live.
    She hoped.
    She was in love.
A heart’s death couldn’t stop the love in the air.
The body would retain it for all of eternity.
    As would the memory.

I wrote it about a year ago, so it's not as fantastic as the writing i've had lately.
So how did you like it?

yeah i'm a bit confused too b/c you just jump right into the story...is it supposed to be a story or a poem? because the spacing and everything i thought it was a poem at 1st
it has a certain ambigious quality, maybe that was what you were going for? it was a bit disconcerting because it kept jumping from one thought or event to a totally dififrentr one. I would like it more if it had a better flow and related better. but it didn't totally "suck"
some parts were very good descriptively

  46. QUESTION:
Severe panic attacks due to homesickness?
I'm visiting my sister for a week. I have been here for five days now. Two days ago I began experiencing insomnia and couldn't sleep until 4:30 a.m. I woke up after only four hours of sleep and instantly felt something was WRONG. My heartbeat was really hard and I could feel it "flip-flopping" which I attributed to heart palpitations. I was sweating, had severe diarrhea, and felt so light headed I thought I was going to faint. I couldn't swallow food and had no appetite, which caused me not to eat all day or the next. When I tried to sleep at night all I could feel was my heart palpitations no matter how hard I tried to focus on breathing and relaxing. I would wake up in the middle of the night when I felt a flip-flop and eventually stay up after getting only a few hours sleep. I began to take regular trips to my room during the day, curl up on the floor and cry for several minutes while breathlessly muttering "I just want to go home now." Over and over, not even thinking about what I was saying. I've always had trouble with homesickness as a child but never this bad - and not since I reached adulthood. Before that morning I woke up I was having a great time and never once did I long to go home but could the panic attacks (which I've never experienced before this) be a more severe reaction to homesickness? Something I have tucked away in my sub-conscious? If so, what can I do for the two days I have left to make it a more enjoyable experience?

    • ANSWER:
well from what you're describing i'd say that it could be a reaction to one of your meds, even though you've taken them for a while the reaction could have been triggered by growth spurts or changes in your hormones, see about switching them first, if that does not work within a week of the switch you should get tested for heart conditions and problems, if all else fails you either have a parasite or bone cancer which can only be tested by drawing bone marrow... from what i hear the only things more painful is giving birth and getting a spinal tap.

  49. QUESTION:
please diagnose me or give me some info thankyou?
Symptoms: always tired and feeling weak; not hungry even though I havent eaten for 10 hours?
what the hell do i have, i am so depressed i think i have cancer or something
i also have had a cold for three months now. that includes: a nasal drip, coughing, sneezing, occaisional sweating, fever, and migraines.

i am so weak sometimes im just standing for a bit listening to s lecture and then all i can think of is sitting down, i have to sit down this is torture, my legs are going to collapse
I'll sleep for 8 hours a night through and still be tired and feel horrible when i wake up that ill go to school at 830 and come back at 6 when im off and go to bed and wake up at 930 do some stuff then go to bed again at 11. and do that all over again.

ve had insomnia for 7 years so i always have shrugged off my tiredness to be due to that, but now that i think about it , i take anti-anxiety pills to fall asleep everynight and i do, i sleep all the way through the eight hours, yet im still tired when i wake up! so its not to do with my insomnia.

the doctor tested my iron levels and said im anemic so now i take a tablet of iron a day
the doctor physically examined my chest and breathing and said it was fine

i feel like im living in a thick fog, its hard to think and move

    things about me healthwise:

ive always bruised easily even as a child, ive always had bad circulation: my hands and feets turn purple when they are cold and my legs go purple in red in a vein like pattern.

ive always been very slim. a bit underweight according to the doctors. ive always eaten well until recently id say half a year ago my appetite fluctuated, i would eat like a cow for a month, non stop not feeling full, and then then next month i wouldnt feel hungry at all.
i never know when my period is coming, it skips, it comes sooner, it comes later

i have panic attacks frequently. ive always been shy as a child. i suffer from depression and have very high anxiety. i take a anti-depressant and an anti-anxiety medicine

i dont have diabetes although before now , id say a year ago id always feel faint if i didnt eat every few hours. my mom had to get me out of the shower one time i was so weak and spoon feed me some yogurt.

ive had my thyroid checked and its fine

ill add more symptoms i have when i thin of them. ive just had so many for so long i just accepted them as normal living.

please diagnose me with something!!!!!!!!!!! i want to know the cause!!!

  50. QUESTION:
Could I have a sporadic familial insomnia (sfi) ?
I am 20 years old, and for a month already I am having troubles falling asleep, which now became a TOTAL insomnia. And it all began out of the blue. I felt this "dizziness" and "instability" prior to the insomnia as well sometimes.......like i "veer to the right or the left side when walking" .....is that pointing out SFI too?

I am really scared because of fatal familial insomnia, a genetic prion disease. Do you think I have that? I think nobody had it in my family, but I have a feeling I am the first one who developed this crap. Any advice? There is a form of that which occurs sporadically, and hit anyone. I heard that the sufferers from FFI/SFI have many nights of no sleep at all, and this is EXACTLY what I have now, and it's 3 nights in a row. If it happens tonight as well, what should I do?
